The Sky is Falling Chorus Commemorates Memorial Day

I love musicals. It’s no secret. From the serious (e.g., Miss Saigon) to the silly (e.g., Legally Blonde) to the obscure (e.g., Bat Boy), I enjoy nearly all of them. Breaking into song out of nowhere is highly entertaining – except in the case of the Sky Is Falling Chorus (SIFC).

You’ve heard them. They are the ones who find no merit in anything that those on the “opposite” side do and go out of their way to point out perceived weaknesses. Like many musicals, it has a variety of casts performing in many venues and touring all across the nation. It’s the cast currently appearing on the national stage that I just can’t appreciate. Every time I turn on the TV, the Radio, the Internet, there they are doing fan kicks and singing in five-part harmony. In an effort to save my sanity (and the ears of those around me), I’ve managed to turn a relatively deaf ear over the past few months. But this is getting ridiculous.

Their latest piece is entitled: “Respecting the Military Means Only Doing So at Arlington Cemetery.” It’s about a President who, in a brazen and allegedly unprecedented move, opts to make his Memorial Day appearance at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery rather than Arlington National Cemetery. Not surprisingly, Glenn Beck sings the lead:

“The president has decided not to honor our troops on Memorial Day and go to — can you find out the last president that decided to take a vacation and then go to a Paul McCartney — come back for a Paul McCartney concert, but not for the laying of a wreath on Memorial Day? Maybe this has happened before. I don’t recall it.”

Seriously? Don’t these people know that there is a war (or two) on? That people need jobs? That there’s a hole in the ocean? That Tori and Dean are going through a rough patch?

I’ve never been the President’s biggest fan (and I’m far from an expert on military matters), but let’s be fair. He’s not the first President to miss a service at Arlington for a variety of reasons – some involving “official business,” others involving vacations.

The Chorus would have you believe he’s not doing anything that day and that he has no respect for the military. On the contrary, he will be speaking at a Memorial Day Service at an official National Cemetery. And I’m no expert, but I’d argue that he’s done more in his 16 months as President in paying his respects to those in the military than many of his predecessors did in the first 16 months of their Presidencies.

I just don’t get what the fuss is about. What’s the issue? Tradition? Geography?

Isn’t the most important thing that he honors our soldiers? Or are the only ones of importance those buried in Arlington? Are soldiers who died defending our country less worthy of Presidential attention because they happen to have been buried elsewhere?

Mr. Beck and the rest of the SIFC – is the only key you know A Minor? And out of tune at that? Stop nitpicking and focus on the important stuff. I dare you.
